Free island tours give visitors a chance to peer down from Perry’s Lookout, where the British fleet was first spotted during the Battle of Lake Erie, an important fight during the War of 1812.
Activities at the Open House also include talks and laboratory sessions, summer class information and tours of the South Bass Island Lighthouse (transportation not provided).
Free transportation will be available from the Stone Lab Research Building on South Bass Island to Gibraltar Island. The last boat to Gibraltar Island leaves at 3:30 p.m., the last boat off Gibraltar Island leaves at 4 p.m.
“Our annual Open House is a great opportunity for visitors to learn about our research on Lake Erie issues of concern, such as harmful algal blooms and invasive species,” said Dr. Chris Winslow, Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory director. “Visitors also get the chance to step back in time to learn about the history of the region.”
Stone Lab merchandise, including t-shirts, sweatshirts and water bottles, will be available for purchase. All proceeds from merchandise sales support Stone Lab scholarships.
